Direct Access

APTA & APTA-KY have developed a direct access resource page to promote the use of direct access in physical therapist practice. Physical therapists should be able to use these resources in clinical settings and with patient populations where direct access is not restricted by state or federal regulations, employer restrictions, payer, or compliance requirements. All 50 states now allow for some form of direct access.

Kentucky was one of the first states to have direct access built into its' practice act. Download the Kentucky Board of Physical Therapy's declaratory ruling on direct access.

The following insurers (depending on policy) allow for direct access to physical therapy services in Kentucky:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • Humana
  • United Healthcare

APTA will soon be surveying members on direct access. Please respond to the survey to ensure you are represented in the results.
